Massive 8.8 Earthquake Off Russia’s Kamchatka Triggers Tsunami Alerts Across US, Japan, Russia

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025, triggering tsunami alerts for the United States, Russia, and Japan.

Iran (IMNA) - The quake, one of the largest recorded in recent years, occurred at a shallow depth near the Pacific coast of Kamchatka, causing a tsunami with waves up to 3-4 meters (9.8 to 13 feet) in the Kamchatka region itself.

Following the earthquake:

Japan issued tsunami warnings, particularly along its Pacific coastline including Hokkaido, where initial tsunami waves of 30 to 40 centimeters were recorded. Evacuation orders were issued for coastal residents, urging them to move to higher ground or designated safe areas. Japan's Prime Minister emphasized prioritizing human safety amid ongoing assessments.

In the United States, tsunami warnings were declared for Hawaii, Alaska, and parts of the West Coast including California, Oregon, and Washington. Hawaii prepared for potentially destructive waves up to 3 meters (10 feet), activating emergency sirens and evacuation plans, especially in low-lying areas. Alaska's Aleutian Islands also received warnings, while a tsunami watch extended along the U.S. west coast and Gua.

Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula experienced a tsunami up to 3-4 meters. Residents were urged to evacuate coastal zones due to successive tsunami waves. Despite significant shaking leading to power outages and structural damage in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, no fatalities have been reported so far.

The earthquake is the strongest since the 2011 Tōhoku quake in Japan and ranks among the top ten largest ever recorded globally. It resulted from shallow reverse faulting in the subduction zone near Kamchatka. Authorities in affected countries remain on high alert as multiple tsunami waves continue to approach shores around the Pacific Rim.

No major casualties have been confirmed yet, but coastal evacuations remain ongoing to mitigate risks from anticipated subsequent tsunami waves . Emergency response teams across the Pacific region are monitoring the situation closely.
