Amnesty International Condemns Israeli Airstrikes on Evin Prison as War Crimes

Amnesty International has concluded that there is no credible evidence to classify Evin Prison in Tehran as a lawful military target.

Iran (IMNA) - The human rights organization states that the Israeli regime’s deliberate airstrikes on the facility constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and must be criminally investigated as war crimes.

In a report released Tuesday following an in-depth investigation, Amnesty International emphasized that under international humanitarian law, “a prison or place of detention is presumed a civilian object,” and no credible evidence exists indicating Evin Prison was a lawful military objective.

Erika Guevara Rosas, Senior Director for Research, Advocacy, Policy and Campaigns at Amnesty International, said, “The evidence establishes reasonable grounds to believe that the Israeli military brazenly and deliberately attacked civilian buildings. Directing attacks at civilian objects is strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law. Carrying out such attacks knowingly and deliberately constitutes a war crime.”

On June 23, Israel carried out multiple airstrikes on Evin Prison amid an ongoing war of aggression launched by the Israeli regime against Iran. The strikes, later confirmed by the Israeli military, killed and injured scores of civilians and caused extensive damage to at least six locations within the prison complex.

This assault follows a broader conflict initiated on June 13, when Israel, backed by the United States, assassinated several high-ranking Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists, along with more than 1,000 civilians. The U.S. escalated the conflict a week later by attacking three Iranian nuclear sites, actions described as blatant violations of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In retaliation, the Iranian Armed Forces targeted key Israeli sites in the occupied territories and struck the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest U.S. military installation in West Asia, compelling a cessation of the assault.
