Iran Reaffirms Commitment to NPT Amid Criticism, Rejects German Accusations as "Fake News"

Iran remains committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its Safeguards Agreement, according to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran (IMNA) - This statement comes in response to remarks from the German Foreign Office, which on Wednesday claimed that Iran’s suspension of direct cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) “sends a devastating message” and removes essential international oversight needed for a diplomatic solution. The German Foreign Office urged Tehran to reverse this decision.

Araghchi dismissed these statements as “fake news,” reiterating that Iran continues to uphold its obligations under the NPT and its Safeguards Agreement. He explained that, in line with new legislation passed by the Iranian parliament (Majlis) following unlawful attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel and the United States, Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA will now be managed through the Supreme National Security Council for security reasons.

Araghchi further argued that, from the Iranian perspective, what truly “sends a devastating message” and undermines diplomatic solutions is Germany’s explicit support for Israel’s unlawful attacks on Iran, including safeguarded nuclear sites, as well as its support for the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear facilities—actions that violate international law, the NPT, and the UN Charter. He also criticized Germany for abandoning its JCPOA commitments by demanding “zero enrichment” in Iran.

Additionally, Araghchi pointed to longstanding Iranian grievances, including Germany’s support for actions in Gaza and its provision of materials for chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq war. He concluded that Germany’s explicit support for the bombing of Iran has destroyed any notion that the German government harbors goodwill toward the Iranian people.
