Iranian Mayors Urge International Action Against Attacks on Civilians

In a joint letter released on June 21, 2025, the mayors of Iran’s largest metropolitan cities have called on international organizations to take decisive and effective action in response to recent attacks against Iran.

Iran (IMNA) - The letter, signed by the mayors of Isfahan, Tehran, Tabriz, Mashhad, and Shiraz, highlights grave violations of international law, including the targeting of civilian infrastructure and the loss of innocent lives—particularly among women, children, scientists, and military personnel.

The mayors emphasize that the ongoing conflict constitutes a clear breach of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and reference an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and war crimes. While acknowledging Iran’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the signatories stress that international organizations remain responsible for upholding legal and humanitarian standards.

The letter urges global bodies to unequivocally condemn the attacks and to rally the international community around the principles of the UN Charter and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, ensuring the protection of civilians and adherence to international law.
