Iran (IMNA) - In an interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei revealed that the Iranian parliament had voted to suspend, but not terminate, cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog.
Baghaei criticized the United States for having “torpedoed diplomacy” and indicated that it could no longer be trusted, pointing to significant damage to Iran's nuclear infrastructure. He reiterated Iran’s entitlement to pursue peaceful nuclear energy as outlined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Regarding the parliamentary bill, Baghaei mentioned that it establishes conditions for Iran’s future interactions with the IAEA, which include guarantees for the safety and security of Iranian scientists and nuclear facilities.
The Iranian parliament has passed a bill that effectively suspends the country’s cooperation with the IAEA, as Iran maintains its commitment to its civilian nuclear program following extensive attacks on the nation by Israel and the United States. This decision comes after a ceasefire between Iran and Israel concluded 12 days of intense clashes, which included significant US military intervention that targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday.
