Iran to Present Counterproposal on Nuclear Deal via Oman, Urges US Not to Waste Opportunity

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced on Monday that Tehran will soon submit its own proposal regarding the nuclear deal to the United States through Oman, urging Washington not to miss this opportunity.

Iran (IMNA) - Baghaei spoke at a press briefing about the ongoing indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US, which have held five rounds of talks since April 12 and plan to continue discussions aimed at reaching a new agreement.

Baghaei emphasized that uranium enrichment is a strategic necessity for Iran’s nuclear program and a matter of national interest, developed indigenously by Iranian scientists over decades. He rejected the notion that uranium enrichment necessarily implies a weapons program, noting that many countries, including US allies, enrich uranium without pursuing military objectives. He described Iran’s resistance to excessive foreign demands as a form of deterrence against pressures exceeding legal and international norms.

Regarding the US proposal, Baghaei stated that Iran’s response would be based on national principles and interests, and any offer that fails to safeguard Iran’s rights is unacceptable. He declined to provide details about the upcoming sixth round of negotiations but confirmed that Iran’s counterproposal would be delivered soon via Oman. He strongly advised the US to take this opportunity seriously in its own interest.

The talks remain deadlocked primarily over the level of uranium enrichment and sanctions relief. Iran insists on continuing enrichment and demands clear guarantees on the lifting of sanctions, while the US maintains that sanctions should be lifted gradually and seeks assurances that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful.
