Iran (IMNA) - On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, via video link, ordered the deployment of the MSSR-Mode S radar system at Abadan airport in southwestern Iran. Officials from the Iranian transportation ministry stated that the new radar system will enhance the region’s air traffic control network.
According to Press TV, the CEO of Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company announced that the monopulse secondary surveillance radar system was entirely designed and built by domestic companies. Mohammad Amirani, the CEO, noted that scientists from Isfahan University of Technology contributed to the project. He added that the system is capable of monitoring both domestic and international flights within a 450-kilometer radius.
Amirani also revealed that the government invested approximately 6.9 million euros ($7.84 million) in the project, reducing the import bill by nearly 1 million euros. “Launching this radar is viewed as a major step on the path to reach self-sufficiency and progress in the country’s aviation industry,” he said.
The deployment of the radar system is part of Iran’s broader efforts to maintain and develop its aviation sector, which have accelerated in recent years due to US sanctions limiting access to foreign technology and investment. Reports indicate that domestic firms have repaired more than a dozen planes grounded by sanctions and have also provided overhaul and inspection services to foreign airlines.
In late 2024, Iranian aviation authorities announced that the country had achieved the capability to manufacture spare parts for the engines of Boeing and Airbus jets.
