Iran (IMNA) - In a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council president on Monday, Iran’s permanent UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, warned that any military action by the US or Israel would be met with a “swift, proportionate, and lawful response.” He emphasized that the US and Israel would bear full responsibility for the consequences of any such “unlawful and reckless aggression,” calling the rhetoric from both countries a grave violation of international law.
Iravani also criticized the US and its allies for militarizing the Red Sea and conducting what he described as unlawful military operations against Yemen. He argued that attributing Yemeni actions to Iran is a deliberate misrepresentation meant to distract from what he called “grave crimes” by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as US attacks on Yemen.
The ambassador’s statement followed a missile strike by Yemen’s Ansarullah movement (Houthis) near Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, after which Israeli and US officials threatened Iran with consequences. In response, dozens of Israeli warplanes, with US coordination, launched airstrikes on Yemen’s Hudaydah port and other targets.
Iran reiterated its call for the UN Security Council to condemn the threats and military actions by the US and Israel, stressing its commitment to regional peace while reserving the right to defend its sovereignty and national interests under international law.
