Iran’s Foreign Minister Criticizes New US Sanctions, Questions Washington’s Commitment Ahead of Rome Talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has sharply criticized the United States for imposing new sanctions amid ongoing indirect negotiations, warning that such “provocative actions” cast doubt on Washington’s seriousness in the diplomatic process.

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Araghchi stated that the imposition of new US sanctions during ongoing talks sends a negative message and raises questions about the sincerity of the American side. “If during negotiations, the opposing parties engage in provocative actions, it can cast doubt on their seriousness,” he said.

Araghchi acknowledged internal disagreements within the United States, noting, “We are aware of the internal disagreements in the US and the active lobbying efforts. We are closely monitoring all these developments and will make decisions accordingly.”

He confirmed that the next round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington is scheduled to take place in Rome, Italy. “Every negotiation is based on differences, and the goal of negotiations is to resolve differences and reach a common understanding. The next round of negotiations will be in Rome,” Araghchi explained, adding that Oman remains the host of the talks, but logistical reasons prompted the move to Rome. He downplayed the significance of the venue, saying, “In our opinion, the location of the talks is not a very important place to waste time on.”

Araghchi emphasized that the negotiations do not have a specific timetable and that Iran is not looking to waste time, expressing his belief that the other side is similarly motivated.

He also addressed the role of European countries, stating, “The three European countries currently play a minor role due to the wrong policies they have adopted, which we do not want to see happen, and for this reason, we are prepared to hold serious negotiations with their presence.” He added that Iran will meet with representatives of the three European countries on Friday in Rome.

Regarding the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Araghchi clarified that the Agency will ultimately have a verification role if an agreement is reached, but currently has no part in the ongoing negotiations. “If an agreement is reached, the verification part of nuclear energy will be assigned to the Agency,” he said.

Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to negotiations but stressed that talks must be based on mutual respect and not conducted under pressure or intimidation.

“We will NOT negotiate under pressure and intimidation. We will NOT even consider it, no matter what the subject may be. Negotiation is different from bullying and issuing diktats,” Araghchi previously stated.

The latest US sanctions, targeting Iran’s fuel network, were announced just as Tehran and Washington concluded two rounds of indirect nuclear talks, with the next session set for Rome. Iranian officials have described these measures as a sign of Washington’s “hostile approach” and a contradiction to its stated commitment to dialogue.
