Iran (IMNA) - Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, announced the delegation's departure on X, stating, “Together with a group of our most experienced colleagues, we are heading to Muscat, accompanied by the esteemed Minister of Foreign Affairs.” Baghaei emphasized Iran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and national interests during the talks.
The negotiations come amid renewed diplomatic efforts following years of strained relations. Iranian officials view the Muscat discussions as a test of US sincerity. On April 8, Araghchi commented that the talks would assess Washington’s seriousness, noting its history of unilateralism and non-commitment. This skepticism stems from former US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 during his first term. Trump later reinstated sanctions on Iran as part of a "maximum pressure" campaign.
Since returning to office for a second term in January 2025, Trump has signaled interest in forging a new agreement to replace the JCPOA. In March, he sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei proposing negotiations and warning of military action should Tehran refuse.
Iran has consistently rejected direct talks under pressure or threats but remains open to indirect negotiations through intermediaries. The upcoming discussions in Oman will reportedly be facilitated by Omani officials acting as mediators between the two delegations.
The outcome of these high-stakes talks could either pave the way for reduced tensions or further highlight the deep mistrust between Tehran and Washington.
