Iran Calls for Constructive Talks with Europe, Highlights Regional Role in Dutch FM Call

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reiterated Tehran's readiness to engage in dialogue with European nations based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Iran (IMNA) - During a phone call on Saturday with Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, the two diplomats explored ways to enhance bilateral ties and addressed key regional and international developments.

Araghchi emphasized Iran's commitment to fostering diplomatic relations, noting that the country has pursued constructive engagement with European powers since 2021. This follows the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and the reimposition of sanctions on Tehran. In response to Europe's failure to fulfill its commitments under the deal, Iran has implemented retaliatory nuclear measures, including deploying advanced centrifuges.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei recently confirmed ongoing expert-level discussions between Iran and JCPOA signatories, including China and Russia. He indicated that further meetings with European nations are likely in the near future.

During their conversation, Veldkamp acknowledged Iran's significant role in regional dynamics and underscored the importance of diplomacy in resolving disputes. He also addressed the issue of three Persian Gulf islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—asserting that any disagreements between Iran and the UAE should be resolved through international regulations. Iran maintains historical claims to these islands, supported by extensive legal and geographical evidence.
