Iran (IMNA) - Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Araghchi confirmed the letter's existence but noted it had not yet reached Iranian officials. “The letter has been written, but it has not yet reached us,” he stated.
The Arab envoy's identity and the exact timing of the delivery remain undisclosed. Trump reportedly wrote the letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing talks for a new nuclear deal to replace the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which he withdrew from during his first term in office. However, Iran has consistently rejected negotiations under Trump’s "maximum pressure" policy, which reinstated sanctions on Tehran after the U.S. exit from the JCPOA in 2018.
Araghchi also addressed concerns over a request for a closed-door session at the UN Security Council, calling it unprecedented and raising doubts about the intentions behind such moves. He emphasized Iran’s commitment to peaceful nuclear development and ongoing negotiations with European nations, China, and Russia. A trilateral meeting between Iran, China, and Russia is scheduled for Friday.
Reaffirming Iran's compliance with international obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Araghchi stressed that Tehran would not accept restrictions beyond the treaty's framework.
