Iran (IMNA) - Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic during his visit to Qatar, Araghchi described such an attack as potentially “one of the biggest historical mistakes the US could make.” He emphasized that Iran would respond “immediately and decisively” to any aggression, escalating tensions significantly across West Asia.
During his trip, Araghchi met with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani to discuss critical regional issues. He praised Qatar's mediation efforts in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing hope that other regional disputes could also be resolved.
While in Qatar, Araghchi also engaged with Hamas officials, declaring that Palestinians had achieved a “victory” in Gaza despite the extensive destruction caused by Israel's military actions. He stated, “Despite all the killings and destruction the whole world witnessed, the Palestinian people held their ground and upheld their values and principles,” viewing this as a significant triumph for Hamas.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering death toll of at least 47,460 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since hostilities escalated on October 7, 2023.
On the situation in Syria, Araghchi reiterated Iran's support for a government that includes all segments of Syrian society following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad. He stressed Iran's commitment to stability and territorial unity in Syria, stating that instability could spill over into broader regional conflicts.
Regarding U.S.-Iran relations under President Donald Trump’s potential re-election, Araghchi reflected on the historical animosity between the two nations. He noted that Trump's previous administration withdrew from the nuclear agreement and was responsible for the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force. While he expressed openness to dialogue with the U.S., he insisted that negotiations should be limited to nuclear issues and called for tangible actions to restore trust.
Araghchi concluded by emphasizing that any attack on Iran would be met with significant consequences, underscoring his belief that such actions would lead to disastrous outcomes for the entire region.
