Iran (IMNA) -The meeting, described as "friendly," took place at the invitation of Guariglia, according to a note sent to the IRNA news agency on Thursday.
During their discussions, Sabouri and Guariglia addressed the situation of Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini, who is incarcerated in Milan on what Iran claims are unfounded charges. They also reviewed the case of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran for allegedly violating local laws. The Iranian ambassador emphasized that Iranian authorities have ensured Sala's needs are met, including access to consular services and communication with her family.
Sabouri expressed Tehran's expectation for Italy to expedite Abedini's release and provide him with necessary comforts while he remains in custody. Abedini was arrested on December 16 at Milan's Malpensa airport based on a U.S. warrant related to a drone attack on a U.S. military outpost in Jordan.
Sala, who arrived in Iran on December 13 with a journalist visa, was arrested six days later. The Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance stated that her case is under investigation and has been handled according to regulations. The Italian Embassy in Tehran has been kept informed about her situation.
This diplomatic engagement highlights the ongoing tensions between Iran and Italy over their respective detained citizens, with both nations seeking resolution while navigating complex international relations involving the United States.
