Iran Confirms No Direct Contact with Syria's Transitional Government

In a statement made during his weekly press conference on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei addressed the status of communications between Iran and Syria's newly formed transitional government.

Iran (IMNA) - He clarified that Tehran does not maintain direct contact with this government.

Baghaei emphasized that Iran has been in contact with various opposition movements in Syria for an extended period. He reiterated Iran's commitment to its presence in Syria, stating that it aims to prevent the spread of ISIL and terrorism in the region. Additionally, he noted Iran's efforts to facilitate political processes within Syria.

The backdrop to these comments includes recent developments in Syria, where terrorists led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, declared on December 8 that they had fully taken control of the Syrian capital and confirmed the fall of the Assad government.
