Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Defends Nuclear Program Amid IAEA Concerns

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, asserted that the Islamic Republic's nuclear enrichment program has no military objectives and is aligned with its technical needs.

Iran (IMNA) - His remarks came in response to claims made by Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who suggested that Iran is enriching uranium near military levels and is progressing towards becoming a nuclear state.

In a tweet posted on X on Tuesday, Gharibabadi emphasized that Grossi's comments were not based on on facts and technical reports and criticized him for interpreting intentions from hypothetical scenarios, which he argued contradicts the responsibilities of the IAEA's Director General. He stated that Iran’s nuclear program is conducted under the supervision of the IAEA and is consistent with international regulations regarding the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Gharibabadi highlighted that respect for countries’ rights to peacefully utilize nuclear energy, including enrichment, is recognized in international documents. He condemned Grossi's statements as politically motivated and contrary to established facts. Furthermore, he reiterated that Iran's enrichment activities are not restricted under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as long as they remain under IAEA oversight.

He criticized Grossi for failing to address the root causes of current tensions, namely the non-fulfillment of obligations by other parties under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement. Gharibabadi argued that ignoring these issues undermines trust in UN institutions.

Concluding his remarks, he called for constructive dialogue based on mutual respect and balanced commitments, particularly regarding sanctions relief, as a sustainable solution moving forward.
