UN Reports 1.1 Million Displaced in Syria Amid Ongoing Factional Fighting

The United Nations humanitarian agency has reported that approximately 1.1 million people have been displaced in Syria since the escalation of hostilities began on November 27.

Iran (IMNA) - This surge in displacement follows the recent offensive by Syrian rebels that led to the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), "the majority are women and children" among those newly displaced as of December 12.

Significantly, over 100,000 individuals have sought refuge in Kurdish-administered areas in northern Syria, driven by fears of retaliatory attacks amid escalating factional conflicts. The situation remains particularly tense in the towns of Manbij, located northeast of Aleppo, and Deir Ezzour, which is characterized by a mixed Arab and Kurdish population. The ongoing violence has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region, as various factions vie for control amidst the chaos.
