Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Accuses Israel of Exploiting Syrian Conflict to Intensify Genocide in Gaza

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, has condemned the Israeli regime for allegedly taking advantage of the ongoing complex situation in Syria to escalate its actions in Gaza, which he characterized as genocide.

Iran (IMNA) - In a post on his X account on Monday, Baghaei marked the anniversary of the Genocide Convention's adoption, stating, “Genocide is defined as a specific set of acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.” He emphasized that today marks 76 years since the UN Convention to Prevent and Punish Genocide was adopted on December 9, 1948.

Baghaei lamented that despite this historical commitment to preventing genocide, a "full-scale genocide is unfolding before our eyes in occupied Palestine." He referenced a report by UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine, Francesca Albanese, which asserted that Israel was established with the intent to eliminate Palestine. “In fact, genocide is part of a century-long project of eliminatory settler-colonialism in Palestine,” he added.

The spokesman highlighted that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had issued rulings on January 26, 2024, stressing the need to halt genocide and prevent actions contrary to the Genocide Convention. However, he noted that Israel has been defying these provisional measures while continuing its actions. “These days the Zionists are abusing the complicated situation in Syria for ever-expanding their genocidal campaign in Palestine,” he warned.

Baghaei called on the international community to take decisive action to defend humanity and end what he described as an ongoing genocide.
