Iran Plans Railway Connection to China via Afghanistan

The head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI), Jabar-Ali Zakeri, expressed Iran's intention to connect its railway network to China through Afghanistan during a meeting with Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzadeh, the head of Afghanistan Railway.

Iran (IMNA) - Zakeri highlighted the strategic advantage of the Iran-Afghanistan-China route, stating that it is the only corridor capable of shortening transit times and reducing costs. He emphasized the importance of completing the Herat rail route according to a specific schedule.

Zakeri affirmed Iran's commitment to supporting the development of Afghanistan's rail infrastructure, noting that the existing railway line in northwest Afghanistan, near the Iranian border, presents a significant opportunity for transit between the two nations. He also mentioned that training courses for Afghan railway employees have been conducted in recent years, with plans for a third course to be held soon at Afghanistan's request.

He reported that many challenges faced by the Iran-Afghanistan Railway Consortium have been addressed, and currently, three trains operate weekly on the designated route between the two countries. Sahibzadeh acknowledged the growing collaboration between Iranian and Afghan railways, expressing gratitude for the training programs provided for 96 Afghan railway employees. He remarked that the Khaf-Herat railway project symbolizes the friendship between Iran and Afghanistan and expressed hope for increased transit and enhanced trade relations as a result of their cooperation.
