Iran Summons UK Diplomat in Response to Sanctions on Shipping Lines

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has summoned the British chargé d'affaires to protest against recent sanctions imposed by the UK on Iran's shipping sector.

Iran (IMNA) - On Monday, the European Union and the UK announced sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and other entities, citing accusations of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia.

The UK measures include an asset freeze on IRISL and Iran Air, which the British government claims are involved in transporting military supplies to Russia amidst its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy described Iran's actions as "dangerous and unacceptable," urging Tehran to halt its support for Russia.

In a reaction on Tuesday night, Iran's Foreign Ministry conveyed its discontent to the British diplomat, asserting that Iran would respond to what it termed "irrational behaviors." The ministry emphasized that Iran's defense cooperation with other nations is legitimate and does not threaten third parties. Officials criticized the UK's actions as violations of international law, undermining principles of freedom of navigation and maritime trade.
