Iran's Foreign Minister Calls for Confidence-Building

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has vehemently rejected U.S. allegations of a plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, labeling the claims as “a fabricated scenario.” In a post on X, Araghchi emphasized that the way forward requires mutual respect between Iran and the United States.

Iran (IMNA) - His comments came after the U.S. Justice Department unveiled charges suggesting that Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards were involved in a scheme to kill Trump just weeks before the November 5 election. "The American people have made their choice, and Iran respects their right to elect the president of their choice," Araghchi stated, adding that "the path forward is also a choice. It begins with respect."

Araghchi pointed to the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran shortly after the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian, implying that the accusations against Iran serve a similar purpose. He remarked, "As a killer does not exist in reality, scriptwriters are brought in to manufacture a third-rate comedy," questioning the credibility of the alleged plot.

The Iranian diplomat reiterated that Iran has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons, framing this stance as aligned with Islamic principles. He called for confidence-building measures from both sides, stressing that “this is not a one-way street.”

On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department detailed an alleged murder-for-hire plot against Trump, which included charges against an Iranian national who purportedly communicated with an Iranian official about surveilling and potentially killing Trump. Iran has dismissed these allegations as “completely baseless and unsubstantiated,” asserting that they are part of a broader conspiracy to complicate U.S.-Iran relations.

This controversy follows Trump's declaration as the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday and his survival of an assassination attempt in July, which resulted in only minor injuries.
