Iran Accuses Israel of Seeking Full-Scale War, Calls for UN Membership Reevaluation

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a stark warning regarding Israel's actions in the West Asia region, claiming that the Israeli regime is intent on igniting a “full-scale war.”

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Thursday, Araghchi asserted that Israel “does not deserve” its United Nations membership due to its ongoing deadly provocations.

The meeting was convened to address the escalating violence in the region, particularly focusing on Lebanon amidst Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip. Araghchi highlighted that since the onset of Israel's military offensive against Gaza on October 7, there has been a marked increase in attacks against Lebanese territory, resulting in hundreds of casualties over the past week.

"In continuation of its brutality in occupied Palestine, the apartheid-occupying regime of Israel is now waging an unjust war of aggression against Lebanon," Araghchi stated, condemning Israel's actions as targeting innocent civilians both across and deep within Lebanese borders. He cited a recent incident where thousands of booby-trapped communication devices were detonated by Israeli forces, leading to at least 39 deaths and injuring 3,000 others.

The Iranian diplomat characterized this act as a "new version of terrorism," urging the international community to recognize its severity and potential to set a dangerous precedent for other terrorist groups. He criticized the United States for blocking a Security Council statement condemning what he termed a "mass terror operation" by Israel.

In a parallel address, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave concerns about the situation in Lebanon, stating, “Hell is breaking loose in Lebanon.” He emphasized the urgent need to avoid an all-out war, warning that it would lead to catastrophic consequences for both Lebanon and the broader region.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell echoed these sentiments, calling for immediate action to prevent further escalation and urging the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in addressing Israeli aggression.
