Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Addresses UN General Assembly, Vows Response to Aggression

In his inaugural speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned recent terrorist acts and aggression against Lebanon, asserting that such actions will not go unanswered. This marks Pezeshkian's first appearance on the international stage as Iran's leader.

Iran (IMNA) - During the opening day of the assembly, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted global challenges, calling for member states to pursue “more effective, inclusive, and networked multilateralism.” He addressed issues of rising “impunity, inequality, and unpredictability” affecting nations worldwide.

Notable speakers alongside Pezeshkian included U.S. President Joe Biden, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The assembly convenes shortly after the U.N. adopted a resolution urging Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories within a year, a move celebrated by Palestine as “historic.”

In his speech, Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of justice and equality for all people and condemned the Israeli regime for its actions in Gaza, where over 41,000 innocent lives have been lost. He stated that Israel's attempts to restore its image through violence have failed and warned that the ongoing aggression against Lebanon would have consequences.

Pezeshkian called for the restoration of Palestinian self-determination through a nationwide referendum for all Palestinians, including those displaced from their homes. He reiterated Iran's historical stance of never initiating war and expressed the nation's commitment to ensuring its security while advocating for peace in regions like Ukraine.

He also reaffirmed Iran's readiness to engage constructively with members of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), emphasizing that full compliance with commitments could pave the way for discussions on broader issues. Pezeshkian criticized sanctions as inhumane weapons that harm innocent lives and reiterated Iran’s willingness to establish equal relations with global powers to foster a better world.
