Iran (IMNA) - Pezeshkian emphasized that "cessation of the [Israeli] occupation and apartheid in Palestine and immediate ceasefire in Gaza are preconditions for international development and peace." He condemned the ongoing violence, stating, "In a world where civilians are being killed ruthlessly in Gaza, blind state terrorism sheds the blood of children and women," asserting that no agreements could ensure peace under such circumstances.
The president highlighted the historical context of the Israeli occupation, which began in 1948 and expanded significantly after the 1967 war. He noted that Israel's actions have led to the imposition of an apartheid system in the West Bank, marked by extensive settlement construction and severe restrictions on Palestinian movement. Although Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has maintained a comprehensive siege since 2006, subjecting its inhabitants to repeated military assaults. The current conflict has resulted in at least 41,455 Palestinian deaths, predominantly among women and children, and nearly 96,000 injuries.
Pezeshkian also addressed broader regional security concerns, advocating for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction without preconditions. He asserted Iran's commitment to fostering a safe and stable region where resources are directed towards economic development rather than conflict.
Furthermore, he criticized unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies, stating that they hinder sustainable development goals. He urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to compile a report on these sanctions in collaboration with affected countries.
In closing, Pezeshkian called for global cooperation based on justice and honesty to tackle pressing international challenges such as war, discrimination, poverty, and hunger. He reiterated Iran's commitment to multilateralism as essential for addressing these issues effectively.
