Iraqi Kurdistan Region Seeks to Be an Opportunity for Iran, Not a Threat: Barzani

The head of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, emphasized that the region will never pose a threat to Iran and will instead strive to be an opportunity for the Islamic Republic. Barzani made these remarks during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Erbil on Tuesday.

Iran (IMNA) - During the meeting, Pezeshkian thanked Barzani for attending the farewell ceremony of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi in Tehran. The Iranian president called for strengthening relations between Tehran and Erbil to achieve mutual progress and development. He stated, "In the talks we had with the Prime Minister of Iraq, we reached an agreement to formulate and specify the perspective of the development of bilateral cooperation in the form of a long-term comprehensive strategic document."

Pezeshkian expressed Iran's readiness to expand cooperation with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the necessity to strengthen economic and commercial relations between the two sides, especially in border areas. He emphasized the importance of providing the necessary security conditions to facilitate these interactions.

Barzani termed Pezeshkian's visit to the Iraqi Kurdistan region as a historic and important event, stating, "We are interested in expanding relations with Iran and I hope that from now on we will witness the acceleration of the process of expanding bilateral interactions."

Barzani acknowledged the support and sacrifices of Iran and Martyr Soleimani during difficult times, saying, "We believe that the Iranian Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini (RA), and the benignity of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, revived our identity and we always consider ourselves indebted to you."

Reiterating that the Iraqi Kurdistan Region will never be a threat to Iran, Barzani stressed, "On the contrary, we will try to be an opportunity for the Islamic Republic of Iran." He stated that Erbil adheres to the security agreement between Iran and Iraq and believes that Iran can play a role in strengthening the relations and interactions of the Kurdistan Region with the central government of Iraq.
