IAEA Director Grossi Seeks Constructive Dialogue with Iran's President

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, expressed hope for establishing constructive dialogue with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to achieve “real results.”

Iran (IMNA) - In his introductory statement at a quarterly meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday, Grossi noted that he had corresponded with President Pezeshkian after the elections in Iran in July, indicating his willingness to meet in Tehran to re-launch dialogue and cooperation between the Agency and Iran.

Grossi mentioned that the new Iranian president agreed to meet him “at an appropriate juncture” and encouraged Iran to facilitate such a meeting in the near future. When asked if "not-too-distant future" referred to before or after the upcoming U.S. presidential election on November 5, Grossi clarified, “No, hopefully before that."

The IAEA Board of Governors passed a resolution against Iran in June, despite warnings from Tehran regarding potential repercussions. In November, Iran began enriching uranium to a purity level of 60% at its Fordow nuclear facility, after notifying the IAEA of its decision. Iran also installed two new IR2M and IR4 cascades at its Natanz facility, which are now prepared for uranium gas injection.

Grossi commented on Iran's nuclear activities, stating, "What we see is that there is some work, but nothing that indicates a rush to a fast implementation of a big increase in terms of enrichment production." He highlighted that Iran has stepped up its nuclear work since 2019, following the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations office in Vienna, Mohsen Naziri Asl, warned of the adverse consequences of the IAEA resolution on the necessary positive atmosphere for interaction between Tehran and the UN nuclear agency. He emphasized that the resolution would not distract the international community from the true intentions of the E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) to allow the Israeli regime to act with impunity in Gaza.

Naziri Asl affirmed that the E3 must be held accountable for the repercussions of the anti-Iran resolution, which he deemed ineffective. He expressed hope for discussions free of political bias and acknowledged the new Iranian administration's willingness to enhance cooperation with the IAEA.
