Iran's Saeid Esmaeili Wins Gold, Alireza Mohmadi Takes Silver in Greco-Roman Wrestling at Paris 2024 Olympics

Iran's Saeid Esmaeili and Alireza Mohmadi have secured a gold and silver medal respectively in the Greco-Roman wrestling events at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Iran (IMAN) - Esmaeili defeated Ukrainian Parviz Nasibov 6-5 in the men's Greco-Roman 67kg finals to claim the top spot, while Mohmadi lost to Bulgarian Semen Novikov 0-7 in the 87 kg finals to take silver.

Esmaeili's journey to the gold medal began with a flawless 10-0 win against Algeria's Ishak Ghaiou, followed by a stunning upset over Cuba's world and Olympic champion Luis Alberto Orta Sánchez with a decisive 8-0 score. He then defeated Armenian Slavik Galstyan 10-4 in the semi-finals to book his spot in the finals.

Meanwhile, Mohmadi opened his campaign with a dominant 9-0 victory over Colombia's Carlos Andres Munoz Jaramillo, before defeating Poland's Arkadiusz Kułynycz 10-1 in the quarter-finals. He then defeated Ukrainian Zhan Beleniuk 3-3 (advantage of last point) in the semi-finals to secure his spot in the gold medal match.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian congratulated Esmaeili on his victory, saying that planning and resilience together result in "valuable gold." This is Iran's third medal at the Paris Olympics, following Amin Mirzazadeh's bronze medal on Tuesday and Mohammad Hadi Saravi's gold medal on Wednesday.
