United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as Iran's new president, urging him to use his country's influential role in West Asia to prevent the outbreak of new conflicts and promote regional stability.

Iran (IMNA) - In a message to Pezeshkian, Guterres expressed the UN's readiness to cooperate with the new administration and support Iran's efforts towards sustainable progress and development. The UN chief emphasized the importance of Iran's role in resolving regional crises and promoting the values and ideals enshrined in the UN Charter.

Pezeshkian won the Iranian presidential runoff election on July 5 and is set to take office for a four-year term. He was officially endorsed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at a ceremony in Tehran on Sunday. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 30.

Guterres's message comes as the region faces ongoing tensions and conflicts, and the UN is seeking to promote diplomacy and cooperation to address these challenges. The UN chief's call for Iran to play a positive role in promoting regional peace and stability is seen as a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
