Iran (IMNA) - Speaking at the second meeting of the preliminary committee of the review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Bahraini criticized the lack of progress in achieving the treaty's goals, citing the continued presence of nuclear weapons arsenals in some countries, particularly the United States. He also pointed to the Israeli regime's refusal to sign the NPT as a major obstacle to achieving a nuclear-free Middle East.
"The proliferation of nuclear weapons in all its dimensions" is a growing concern, Bahraini warned, as more countries rely on nuclear weapons under the NATO umbrella. He emphasized that as long as nuclear powers continue to pursue their arms races and programs, there will be no progress towards nuclear disarmament.
Iran remains committed to advancing the goals of the NPT and the peaceful nature of its own nuclear program, but Bahraini stressed that the existence of Israel's nuclear weapons program is a major obstacle to achieving a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East. He also criticized double standards applied by some nuclear countries, particularly the United States and its Western allies, in supporting Israel's nuclear weapons program.
The Iranian envoy urged for greater international cooperation and pressure on Israel to abandon its nuclear weapons program, which he warned poses a significant threat to regional and global security.
