Iran Sees 58.5% Surge in Cargo Transit in Four Months, Reaching 7.6 Million Metric Tons

The Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) announced on Monday that the country's cargo transit volume has experienced a significant increase of 58.5% in the four months to July 21, compared to the same period last year.

Iran (IMNA) - According to IRICA head Mohammad Reza Rezvanifar, the total cargo transit volume reached 7.622 million metric tons, with the Piranshahr border crossing on the border with Iraq's Kurdistan region witnessing a staggering 661% year-on-year increase, the largest among all border crossings in Iran.

The Sarakhs crossing, a key trade gateway between Iran and Central Asia on the border with Turkmenistan, saw a 286% rise in transit activity over the same period. The Parvizkhan customs office, located on the western border with Iraq, was responsible for the largest part of cargo transit via Iran, processing over 2.166 million metric tons during the four-month period.

The Shahid Rajaei container port, Iran's largest port on the Persian Gulf coast, came second in terms of foreign cargo processed for transit during March-July.

Iran has recently relaxed restrictions on foreign cargo transit and invested in improving its railways and road infrastructure as part of efforts to generate more revenue from growing freight transport activity on north-south and east-west trade corridors in the region.
