Iran railway makes history with first Russian coal export to India

In a groundbreaking development, Iran's railway has successfully transported 9,500 tons of Russian coal to India for the first time, according to the head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) Seyed Miad Salehi.

Iran (IMNA) - The cargo, consisting of seven freight wagons, was shipped from Russia via the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200km multimodal route that spans from St. Petersburg to the Indian port of Mumbai. The coal will be shipped by sea along the final part of the route from Iran's Bandar Abbas port to Mumbai.

This historic achievement marks a significant milestone in the development of the INSTC, which was initiated in the early 2000s and has gained new momentum in recent years as Russia seeks to diversify its trade routes due to Western sanctions. The corridor offers an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative and is expected to increase Iran's transit volume significantly.

The Iranian government has expressed optimism about the growth potential of this route, with President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian emphasizing cooperation with neighbors, China, and Russia. The successful export of Russian coal to India via Iran's railway is seen as a major step towards realizing this vision.
