Iran (IMNA) - During a visit to Qom on Friday, Eslami stated that Iran's heavy water ranks first globally in terms of quality. Only a few countries possess the capability to produce heavy water, Eslami added. Iran utilizes heavy water and its derivatives for research and development purposes in the pharmaceutical industry and other sectors.
The AEOI chief highlighted that heavy water and its derivatives are widely used in the development of new medications and the manufacturing of newborn screening kits, which are in high demand in the medical sector.
Eslami also emphasized Iran's progress in producing radiopharmaceuticals, which benefit more than one million people annually. He noted that the nuclear sector has assisted various domestic industries, such as petrochemical, steel, wood, paper, and oil, by commercializing nuclear instrumentation.
In December 2022, Iran unveiled plans to develop new homegrown radiopharmaceuticals based on heavy water. The AEOI launched the second phase of its deuterium production unit in the Arak Heavy Water Reactor Facility in central Iran in April 2021.
