Iran (IMNA) - In two letters addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Security Council President Pedro Comissário Afonso, Iravani dismissed the misinformation propagated by the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, in a letter dated April 19, 2024.
Iravani emphasized that Iran has consistently abided by international law, upheld the UN Charter's principles, and complied with UN Security Council resolutions. He highlighted Iran's commitment to promoting international peace and security through active participation in various spheres.
The Iranian diplomat clarified that Iran's recent strikes on April 13 were conducted directly and officially by Iran in response to Israeli military aggressions, particularly the attack on April 1 against the Iranian diplomatic premises in Damascus. Iravani stressed that these actions were necessary, legitimate, and in line with Iran's right to self-defense under the UN Charter, targeting only military objectives to prevent civilian harm.
Iravani refuted claims of involvement by resistance groups in Iran's actions, asserting that Iran does not have proxies in the West Asia region. He emphasized that resistance factions in Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon are legitimate groups fighting against Israeli occupation and aggression, not proxies under Iran's control.
The Iranian envoy condemned Israel's attempts to label these groups as proxies, attributing it to Israel's efforts to justify its own aggressive actions and destabilizing measures in the region. Iravani underscored Israel's history of violating international law and UNSC resolutions, branding it as the primary threat to international peace and security.
Iravani called for the Security Council to address Israel's destabilizing actions and atrocities against Palestinians, emphasizing the need for immediate attention and decisive action. He criticized Israel for attempting to divert attention from the ongoing atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza through baseless allegations.
The Operation True Promise, launched by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) with extensive missile and drone strikes on Israeli-occupied territories, was a response to Israeli aggression against the Iranian consulate in Damascus. The operation inflicted damage on Israeli military bases following the attack that resulted in casualties among Iranian military personnel.
