Iran (IMNA) - Over 61 million citizens were eligible to vote, with polls opening at 8 a.m. local time (0430 UTC) across the nation.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was among the first to vote in Tehran. Speaking after casting his ballot, he urged voters: "Our dear nation should know that the eyes of many people in the world are observing Iran. Make friends happy and disappoint the ill-wishers."
Voters are selecting 290 members of Parliament from a field of over 15,000 candidates. The elected Parliamentarians will serve four-year terms.
Simultaneously, voters are choosing 88 members of the Assembly of Experts, which oversees the activities of the Supreme Leader and has the authority to appoint or dismiss the leader.
Brigadier General Saeed Montazer-al-Mahdi, spokesman for the Iranian police, stated that 190,000 police officers are deployed to ensure election security. "There are no anticipated law enforcement or security issues," he said.
Iran's Constitution emphasizes the importance of public opinion in governing the country through elections. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has held 40 rounds of presidential and parliamentary elections.
