RICS Leaders Convene Emergency Virtual Meeting to Address Gaza Crisis

Upon the proposal by Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi, the leaders of the BRICS group of emerging economies are set to hold an urgent virtual meeting to discuss the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Iran (IMNA) - In a statement released by the South African president's office, it was announced that the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates will gather under the South African presidency for this extraordinary meeting. The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, will be opened by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

During the meeting, the six-member BRICS countries and the invited states will deliver separate statements addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Antуnio Guterres will also be in attendance, and a joint statement is expected to be issued by the participants.

This emergency meeting comes after the BRICS group agreed, in August, to admit Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia as new members, with their official membership beginning on January 1, 2024.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza escalated on October 7 when Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement, launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm in response to intensified Israeli aggression against Palestinians.
