Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui murdered in his home

On 14 October 2023, Dariush Mehrjui, a renowned Iranian filmmaker, and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were tragically found murdered in their villa located in Karaj, near Tehran. The report of this incident was confirmed by Mohammad Mehdi Asgarpour, the head of the Cinema House Board, as well as one of the filmmakers present at the scene.

Iran (IMNA) - The incident occurred in Meshkin Dasht, Karaj, and it was Dariush Mehrjui's daughter who reported the incident to the police. However, official investigations regarding the perpetrators and motives behind these murders have not been publicly disclosed, leaving further details unavailable. The Alborz Province police have not yet announced the motive for Dariush Mehrjui's murder.

Dariush Mehrjui is a renowned Iranian filmmaker known for his films that are often inspired by literature and adapted from both Iranian and foreign novels and plays. His last film, titled "Laminor," was released in 2019, adding to his impressive body of work.

Throughout his career, Mehrjui has received numerous awards and recognition. He has been honored with a total of 49 national and international awards. Some notable awards include the Golden Seashell from the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 1993, the Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998, and the Crystal Simorgh of the Fajr Film Festival in 2004. In 2019, he was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 1st Diorama International Film Festival & Market, further highlighting his significant contributions to the world of cinema.
