Iran (IMNA) - In a press release, Pashinyan's office expressed hope for the continued development and enhancement of relations during Ambassador Sobhani's tenure. Sobhani reiterated Iran's unwavering support for Armenia's territorial integrity and expressed concerns about the humanitarian situation in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, emphasizing the need to safeguard the security and rights of Armenians residing in that area.
The Iranian diplomat expressed the desire for the Islamic Republic to enhance its relations with Armenia in various areas.
Both sides also discussed several shared issues, including the implementation of collaborative plans in fields like economy, trade, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, science, and culture. Nagorno-Karabakh is a region located within Azerbaijan's borders in the Caucasus. While it is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, it is primarily populated by ethnic Armenians.
Armenian authorities, who have governed the region without international recognition since the early 1990s, announced on Wednesday that local "self-defense forces" had surrendered and disbanded following a ceasefire mediated by Russia. This ceasefire halted Azerbaijan's 24-hour offensive against pro-Armenian forces aiming to reclaim the territory.
On Thursday, representatives from Azerbaijan and Karabakh separatists engaged in their first direct peace talks in Yevlakh, as Baku claimed complete control over the region. Iran calls upon Azerbaijan and Armenia to resolve their dispute through dialogue and adhere to the ceasefire agreement.
Iran has continuously urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve their conflict regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh region using peaceful means.
