Iran invited to join BRICS bloc

Iran has been asked to join the BRICS group of growing countries, whose leaders are now meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, to explore the bloc's growth.

Iran (IMNA) - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday that the BRICS member countries had decided to accept Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia as new members.

The five existing member countries have established "consensus on the first phase of this expansion process" and have asked the six governments to join the BRICS group on January 1, 2024, he said during the organization's leader's conference in Johannesburg.

Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president's deputy chief of staff for political affairs, responded to the news by calling Iran's participation in BRICS a "historic development" and a "strategic success" for the Islamic Republic's foreign policy.
"Felicitations to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] and the great nation of Iran," Jamshidi said on X, previously Twitter.

BRICS growth, according to Chinese President Xi Jinping, would provide additional fuel to the group's collaboration mechanism.

This growth reflects BRICS' desire for unity and collaboration, according to Xi at the meeting.

"This expansion of membership is historic," he remarked. "The expansion also marks a new beginning for BRICS cooperation." It would revitalize the BRICS cooperation mechanism and enhance the force for global peace and development."

UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed expressed gratitude for his country's participation as a new member of the "important group."
