Iran firmed about improving all-out ties with Algeria: FM Amir-Abdollahian

Iran is keen to strengthen bilateral ties with Algeria in a number of areas, notably in the business, commerce, and tourist sectors, according to foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Iran (IMNA) - The two nations have "excellent" levels of political connections, Amir-Abdollahian noted when meeting with the speaker of the Algerian People's National Assembly on Monday.

He praised the Algerian people for their resistance to colonial rule and support of Palestine.

The senior Iranian diplomat condemned the recent blasphemous activities against Islamic sanctities in certain European countries, including Sweden and Denmark, and stated that parliaments in Muslim states have a key role in combating Islamophobia.

He mentioned that the senior lawmakers from Algeria and Iran had made a significant agreement to organize a virtual summit of the presidents of parliaments to denounce sacrilegious activities committed against Islamic sanctuaries.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Algerian People's National Assembly's speaker earlier on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said he and Boughali, as the president of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), concurred with holding a virtual meeting among the chiefs of parliaments to denounce the desecration of Islamic sanctities, including Qur'an-burning in Western countries, and find an appropriate response to the issue.

In his discussion with the Iranian foreign minister, Boughali said that Tehran and Algiers have similar positions on a number of global issues and urged the development of bilateral ties in a number of different areas.

He also denounced a recent terrorist attempt that targeted innocent bystanders at the Shah Cheragh holy site in Shiraz, a city in southern Iran.

On August 13, a shooter opened fire on worshippers at the Shah Cheragh sacred site, leaving two people dead and several more injured. He was detained on the spot and given over to detectives for questioning.

Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced in a statement on Friday that it has detained a suspect with ties to Daesh who was a "most pivotal" supporting figure in the fatal terrorist attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine.
