Five million pilgrims expected to arrive in Iraq for the Arbaeen ceremonies

The Interior Minister of Iraq has stated that his country is prepared to accept five million international pilgrims taking part in the Arbaeen religious ceremonies.

Iran (IMNA) - Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, who heads a high committee in charge of Arbaeen security, told Mehr on Monday that Iraq is ready to receive five million foreign pilgrims, and that five regions are ready for the Arbaeen trip.

Thousands of pilgrims have started walking from their home countries to the holy city of Karbala.

Millions of people are reportedly ready to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, either singly or in groups. To assist the pilgrims, a number of Mawkib (volunteer stations) have been set up on the roadways and close to the Iranian-Iraqi border crossing points.

Arbaeen marks the completion of the 40-day mourning period that followed the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his devoted companions in the Battle of Karbala on Muharram 10 in the year 61 AH (680 CE).
