Iran (IMNA) - As reported by Khayyam Nekouyi, if Iran utilizes an effective management system for its water and land resources, it will be able to meet its growing food demand in the following seven years.
He was reported by the IRIB News as adding, "Otherwise, with the continued trend in water resource reduction and the increasing (global) food supply problems, the country's food security will be at risk."
The official, who doubles as the deputy agricultural minister, noted that Iran's annual precipitation average had dropped from 250 millimeters to 220 millimeters and that future water shortages and poor resource management might pose a serious threat to the country's ability to feed itself.
However, he said that by using more effective farming and water management practices, Iran could boost its agricultural output to meet its growing food needs and reduce its reliance on imports.
The official declared, "We have the capabilities and infrastructure for producing the fundamental goods required by the nation.
In recent years, Iran has taken steps to boost the country's agricultural industry.
The goal of the policy has been to ensure food security in the nation at a time when trade restrictions are in place as a result of US sanctions.
