Unilateral sanctions impede women's empowerment

Khadijeh Karimi, director general for international affairs of Iran's vice presidency for women and family affairs, claims that unilateral sanctions from the West and forceful, illegal actions impede the advancement, expansion, and prosperity of women in a variety of fields.

Iran (IMNA) - In Geneva, Switzerland, during the Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls, Karimi made the comments on Friday.

Articles 20 and 21 of the Iranian Constitution highlight the equality of all men and women. "The Islamic Republic of Iran believes in the inherent dignity of women," she said.

Karimi also criticized Iran's expulsion from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), expressing regret that the action was a glaring instance of discrimination against women, particularly Iranian women.

She continued by saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran has pursued the empowerment of women and girls with more vigor and seriousness in spite of such overt and illegal discrimination.

"We actively take into account the issues raised by our women and girls while working to empower Iranian women and girls and guarantee that their rights are protected. This is a high priority for us, and we'll work hard to advance it," she added.
