Iran, Russia-led EAEU set to clinch a free trade agreement by year's end

Iran and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are anticipated to sign a free trade zone deal by the end of the year, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.

Iran (IMNA) - In an interview with the Russian news agency TASS on Monday, Overchuk stated that there had been "progress" in the negotiations between Iran and the EAEU, which also includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, and that they were now nearing their conclusion.

We fervently hope that such a contract may be finalized before the year is through.

The deal would replace and broaden an interim pact that currently lowers customs taxes on hundreds of different product categories.

Since February 2022, when Iran was placed under a comprehensive regime of Western sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has attempted to strengthen its economic and trade connections with Iran.

As the two countries seek to work together to lessen the effects of international sanctions on their industries, Iran and Russia have recently inked significant agreements to increase their collaboration in the fields of manufacturing and energy.

Iran, Russia-led EAEU set to clinch a free trade agreement by year's end.

A number of free trade zone agreements are the subject of ongoing discussions between the EAEU and a number of other nations, according to Overchuk.

"[We are] in discussions with the UAE, Egypt, India, and Indonesia. The economic center of the new multipolar world is shifting in the direction of each of these nations since they are all friendly to us and have expanding markets,” according to Overchuk.

Such discussions, he continued, are "very difficult, and they take years."

"Many diverse interests must be taken into consideration during negotiations. In this instance, the interests of the firms and consumers from all five EAEU member states are at stake. Our negotiators need to take all of this into consideration. The Russian official acknowledged the complexity of the procedure.
