After devastating Taliban strike, Iran's interior minister declares Afghan border to be safe

Days after a fatal, unprovoked attack by Taliban troops, Iran's interior minister said on Monday that tensions on the country's eastern border with Afghanistan had decreased and the region is now secure.

Iran (IMNA) - Two days had passed since the deaths of two Iranian border guards who were shot and murdered by Taliban troops who had violated international law by firing at a border station in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

"At the time, we are not experiencing any issues. The border crossing is calm and accessible to vehicles, he claimed.

"Afghan border guards opened fire, and of course we responded appropriately," he continued.

The interior minister further mentioned that the conflict with the Taliban was settled through discussions after a brief exchange of fire.

On Sunday, Brigadier General Kioumars Heidari, the commander of the Iranian Army's Ground Force, warned during a visit to Sistan and Baluchestan that the Islamic Republic will alter its strategy if Afghanistan disregards international law and the ideals of good neighborliness.

He said that the Iranian Army's Ground Forces have total command over the regions around the border with Afghanistan.

The Taliban were able to take control of Afghanistan in August 2021 after making significant territorial gains during a chaotic departure of US-led foreign forces and the quick disintegration of the nation's security forces.

Iran has stated that it does not recognize the Kabul government, underscoring the importance of establishing an inclusive Afghan government.
