Iran (IMNA) -Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman is currently in Tehran, leading a highly regarded delegation at the invitation of President Ebrahim Raeisi.

When Sultan Haitham arrived at Tehran's Mehrabad Airport on Sunday, he was greeted cordially by Raeisi's vice-president.

At a ceremonial event held at the Saadabad Palace in northern Tehran, Raeisi also extended his greeting to the Sultan of Oman and his entourage that accompanied him.

The two presidents had a private conversation. Four cooperation agreements in the areas of economics, investment, and energy are expected to be signed.

An important turning point in the relationship between the two regional allies was reached with Sultan Haitham's visit to Tehran, which created new opportunities for tighter diplomatic collaboration and enhanced communication.

Oman has historically served as an avenue for communication between the West and Iran. Several dual nationals and foreign citizens have been freed through the country's mediation.

Olivier Vandecasteele, a Belgian spy who had been operating under the cover of a humanitarian worker, was released by Tehran on Friday. The Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi, who had been detained in Belgium on spurious terror-related allegations, was exchanged for the Belgian citizen, who had been in detention for about 15 months.

In the run-up to a nuclear agreement Iran and major nations concluded in 2015, Oman also served as a mediator between Tehran and the West.

Iranian and Omani officials signed 12 cooperation papers and memorandums of understanding for the growth of bilateral collaboration in a variety of sectors during the Iranian president's important visit to Muscat in May.

Both parties have praised the Omani leader's two-day visit as opening "a new chapter" in their diplomatic ties.
