Iran striving to establish large refinery in south

In an effort to address the increased demand for gasoline that has forced the nation to begin imports after more than a decade, a sizable Iranian gas condensate refinery is anticipated to go online next year.

Iran (IMNA) - The firm in charge of constructing the Persian Gulf Mehr Refinery said on Saturday that the facility is scheduled to open in March 2023 with a processing capacity of 120,000 barrels per day (bpd).

According to Mostafa Shahir of the Khatam al Anbia Construction Headquarters (KAA), the Mehr refinery will close a growing imbalance between supply and demand for gasoline in Iran.

He was quoted as saying this on the sidelines of the Iran Oil Show, a four-day energy expo that ended on Saturday in Tehran. "It is expected that the launch of this refinery would add 13 million liters of gasoline, three million liters of diesel, and one million liters of kerosene to the country's (daily) output capacity," he said.

At the Iran Oil Show, a four-day oil exhibition that wrapped on Saturday in Tehran, he was cited as saying this. According to him, the opening of the refinery will increase the nation's daily output capacity by 13 million liters of gasoline, three million liters of diesel, and one million liters of kerosene.

The Persian Gulf Mehr Refinery is currently being developed near the Persian Gulf Star Refinery, a 360,000 bpd refinery that works on gas supplies from South Pars, the world's biggest gas field, which is located on the Persian Gulf's maritime border between Iran and Qatar.

Iran is presently generating almost 105 million liters of gasoline per day, falling five million liters short of satisfying record daily demand observed on busiest travel days in recent months.

In recent months, ultra-low gasoline and diesel prices have resulted in a significant increase in fuel smuggling across Iranian borders, prompting the nation to begin restricted gasoline imports from countries such as Russia.
