Iran expects major surge in electricity demand this summer

Iran anticipates a significant increase in energy demand this summer, despite attempts to restrict surging consumption in the country's residential and industry sectors.

Iran (IMNA) - According to a spokesperson for Iran's Power Generation, Distribution, and Transmission Company (known as Tavanir), peak electricity consumption in Iran may rise to 73 gigatonnes (GW) this summer, up more than 10% from last year's data.

This summer, according to Mostafa Rajabi, Iran would produce 62.5 GW of electricity at its full capacity. He also stated that the country is going to attempt to bridge the gap between its supply and demand for energy by taking steps to reduce consumption in the manufacturing and residential sectors.

Rajabi said a government decision in March to stop using daylight saving time could lead to an increase of 1 GW in demand for electricity this year.

Temperatures are also predicted to reach record highs this summer, resulting in a record jump in cooling demand.

Iran's Energy Ministry said earlier on Monday that the government will mandate a change in normal working hours for its departments and offices beginning May 22 in order to reduce the country's electrical consumption.
