Iran (IMNA) - Nasser Kan'ani, a spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, made the statements on Monday, after preliminary results indicated that Turkey's hotly disputed election would proceed to a runoff.
He praised the Turkish people, election administrators, and political parties, and wished them success.
According to Kan'ani, "the significant turnout of voters in Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday and the peaceful running of the elections are an indication of victory for democracy in the neighboring and Muslim country."
Incumbent Approximately 49.42 percent of the vote went to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while Kemal Kilicdaroglu, his primary competitor, received 44.95 percent. Sinan Ogan, a third contender, received 5.2 percent of the vote.
Both Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu fell short of the required 50 percent vote total, forcing a second round to be place on May 28.
Nearly 89 percent of the more than 64 million Turkish citizens who were entitled to vote, including those who resided abroad, cast ballots in the election to select the country's next president and members of the parliament for a five-year term.
