Iran stepping up attempts to safeguard its water rights from Helmand

According to the energy minister of Iran, the nation must make certain crucial choices in order to protect its water rights from the Helmand River in Afghanistan.

Iran (IMNA) - In a meeting on Monday, Ali Akbar Mehrabian added, representatives from the major government agencies in charge of the water rights problem will make the final choices.

"Some significant decisions will be taken during the meeting on how to address the water problem in the east of the country," Mehrabian explained.

His remarks came only hours after Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi directed the foreign and energy ministries to investigate the question of water rights in Helmand, also known as Hirmand in Iran, due to the importance of the problem for those residing in the country's east.

Mehrabian stated that government authorities will go to every length to protect Iran's water rights from Helmand.

Iran stepping up attempts to safeguard its water rights from Helmand

Iran is stepping up its attempts to encourage Afghanistan's governing Taliban group to comply with its duties under the 1973 Helmand River water accord.

Officials issued a warning in January that if Sistan and Baluchestan in southeast Iran does not receive the water supply to which it is legally entitled, Afghan refugees would be forced out of the area.

According to reports, Sistan's residents may experience severe water shortages in the next months if water flow from Afghanistan is not restored.
