Iran warns US that chance to resurrect JCPOA would not endure forever

Iran's senior nuclear negotiator believes the 2015 Iran nuclear deal may be revived if the US and European signatories to the pact have the desire to do so, but warns that the chance will not exist forever.

Iran (IMNA) - On the fifth anniversary of the United States' unilateral departure from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Ali Bagheri Kani, also deputy foreign minister for political affairs, made the statements in tweets on Tuesday.

"A critical reminder: five years ago, the United States dealt a fatal blow to the 'rule of law at the international level' by illegally withdrawing from the JCPOA." Since then, the United States has been unable to rectify its wrongdoing. Iran's legal corrective steps will be maintained," he stated.

"If the reneging party (and EU/E3) demonstrate credible political will, full implementation of the JCPOA (with effective sanctions lifting at its core) could be resumed." "Nothing lasts forever!"

Iran demonstrated to the world the benign character of its nuclear program by signing the JCPOA with six world nations. However, Washington's withdrawal in May 2018 and subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran put the deal's viability in doubt.

Negotiations began in April 2021 in Vienna, Austria, with the goal of lifting anti-Iran sanctions and assessing the United States' commitment to rejoining the agreement.

However, the discussions have been stalled since August 2022 because to Washington's refusal to remove all sanctions and its reluctance to provide required guarantees that it will not quit the accord again.
